El uso de USED TO con la canción "Somebody That I used to Know"

Con la ayuda de la canción «Somebody That I Used to Know«, vamos a pegarle un súper repaso al uso de «used to» en inglés.

¿A veces no os habéis parado a pensar en cómo habéis cambiado con el paso de los años? No me refiero solamente al aspecto físico sino a todo lo demás: las costumbres, la forma de pensar, los gustos…En mayor o menor medida todos hemos modificado algunos aspectos de nuestra vida. Al igual que ocurría con los Pokemon, nosotros también evolucionamos y gran parte de este proceso se debe a los cambios, ya sea a mejor o a peor, pero esa es otra cuestión…

El post de hoy va a centrarse en el used to. Seguramente os resulte familiar, además en el blog ya os puse un Power Point sobre el tema. Pero por si no lo recordáis, os refresco la memoria…

El used to se traduce como “solía”. Por lo tanto, al igual que ocurre en castellano, siempre se referirá a un tiempo pasado.
Pero ¡cuidado!, tan solo lo podré usar para referirme a acciones frecuentes en el pasado que ya no hacemos.
El used to no se usa para hablar de cualquier acción puntual en pasado.
Para que me entendáis mejor, es el verbo más usado en las típicas batallitas de los abuelos. ¿Quién no ha oído alguna vez a una persona mayor suspirar al echar de menos the good old times?

Estructura

Es muy simple. Al referirse al pasado sigue exactamente la estructura del pasado simple.

AFIRMATIVA

I used to run 12 km every day.

¿Recordáis la –ed de los verbos regulares en pasado? Pues es la misma. “Yo solía correr 12 km todos los días”, se entiende que ahora la situación ha cambiado.

INTERROGATIVA

Did I used to run 12 km every day?

Al igual que ocurría en el pasado simple. El uso del DID en la interrogativa me obligaba a mantener el verbo en su forma base, por lo tanto→ USE (con did no es used).

NEGATIVA

I didn’t used to run 12 km every day?

Nuevamente al tener el did pero en su forma negativa “didn’t”, seguimos manteniendo la regla: DIDN’T + forma base USE.

En resumen:

Used to + forma BASE: Afirmativa
Did +Suj+ use + to+ forma BASE: Interrogativa
Suj+ didn’t+ use + to+ forma BASE: Negativa

Pues bien, ahora que os he recordado la estructura, os propongo que hagáis dos listas.

La primera columna corresponderá al USED TO, ya que se trata de acciones que nosotros solíamos hacer en el pasado; la segunda corresponderá al DIDN’T USE TO puesto que son acciones que aunque nosotros no solíamos hacerlas, ahora sí.

Pronunciación de used to

¡Ojo con la pronunciación del used to! Recordemos que ya hablamos de las diferentes pronunciaciones de los verbos regulares.

En este caso se pronunciaría con un sonido –t final: used to /ˈjuːst tuː/

¡Así que no me entere yo que vais por ahí diciendo /yused tú/! La pronunciación correcta es /ˈjuːst tuː/. Y para asegurarme bien de que no olvidaréis su pronunciación, vamos con la cancioncilla que os comentaba al principio…

Para quien no la haya escuchado….¿sabéis ese tipo de canciones pegadizas que tatareamos hasta la saciedad? Pues esta casa con esta descripción a la perfección…mira, me ha salido un pareado (rhyming couplet).

Tomáoslo como un ejercicio de listening. Rellenad los huecos con las palabras que faltan. ¡No hagáis trampa! Intentad pillar las palabras, luego las comprobáis con la letra completa de la canción que encontraréis al final.

Pero antes de darle al play, fijaos que os he marcado en negrita algunas cosillas. Se trata de slang, es decir, son términos usados en el argot inglés. Os recomiendo que antes de ir a ver la definición, que os pondré al final de la canción, intentad averiguar el significado por el contexto.

Es un ejercicio genial de comprensión y predicción del vocabulario nuevo. Recordad que cuando leemos en inglés, es perfectamente normal no entender todas-y-cada-una-de-las-palabras (every single word), por eso siempre debemos ayudarnos del contexto. Digamos que es simplemente ¡cuestión de supervivencia!
